Bro BROWN, Robert Barrie July 22, 1945 - December 13, 2013

Family and friends will celebrate the life of Barrie Brown on Thursday.

The well-known Campbell River businessman died Friday following a short battle with cancer. He was 68.
“I worked with him for 15 years. He was a wonderful man and he touched so many lives,” said family friend
Lynn Owens.

Born July 22, 1945, in Prince George, at age six Brown and his family moved to Vancouver where he was raised. Even as a youngster, the entrepreneurial spirit was already thriving in Brown.
“From a very young age, he set out to do as much as he could and he certainly did,” said Owens.
After high school Brown went to university for a while, but the allure of business proved too great. He started in logging, then into commercial fishing on his own boat, then into the “wild blue yonder” as a pilot, and that eventually led to Campbell River.
In 1975, Brown bought Mason Car Centre in North Campbell River and changed the name to Targa Motors. In 1986, Brown partnered with Marc Hylands at the downtown car dealership located at Dogwood Street and 13th Avenue.
Around the same time, Brown also bought the nine-hole Glen Alder Golf Course on Petersen Road. Nine more holes were added and the name was changed to Sequoia Springs Golf Course, also known as “The Garden Course.”
In 1990, Brown sold his part of the car dealership to Hylands and then opened Barrie Brown Pontiac Buick GMC at the site where he first started selling cars.
The dealership closed in the late 2000s, but Brown wasn’t done as he opened Barrie Brown Nissan. In 2012, Brown sold the business to the Tom Harris Group and continued to manage his real estate holdings.
With the sale of the dealership, Brown was able to devote more time to fishing, motorcycling trips and family.
He married Linda on June 1, 1968, and they had two boys, Craig and BJ. The sons are now grown, married, and have added three more children to the family.
Brown was a supporter of local sports and sponsored minor rep hockey teams for several years. He was a member of the chamber of commerce and a supporter of the food bank and the hospital foundation.
“Barrie was also a founding member of the Campbell River chapter of Ducks Unlimited and he was very proud of that,” said Owens.
In 1998, Brown built a swanky new clubhouse at Sequoia Springs. It has proved to be a favourite location for weddings and other big events, and the spacious second storey became home.
A memorable event occurred there on Feb. 2, 2010. The Browns were at home when they heard a loud crash around 6 p.m.
When Brown went downstairs to investigate, he immediately saw there had been a break-in. Several hundred dollars had been stolen along with clothing from the pro shop.
As Linda called police, Brown and one of his sons jumped in a truck and went looking for the suspect.
Just down the road, at Windsor Plywood, they caught up with the 24-year-old thief who was found with Linda’s sunglasses, a new Dunlop golf glove on his left hand and a golf shirt which just so happened to sport the the Sequoia Springs logo.
Father and son held the suspect until Mounties arrived.

Bro. ELLIOTT, Stanley Owen March 11, 1928 - December 19, 2013

Stanley Owen Elliott of Campbell River, BC passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2013
at the Campbell River Memorial Hospital. Dad was born on March 11, 1928 in Port Lorne, Nova Scotia.
He grew up in Economy, Nova Scotia. As soon as Dad could, he entered the Navy. He recalled one
particular highlight, a game of crib with a five star general in which Dad had perfect score of 29. He was very proud of that.

After a short stay in the Navy Dad moved to Calgary and worked as an electrician while studying for his commercial pilot’s license.
As a young lad, Dad had a fascination with planes and spent many hours building all sorts of model planes. At the age of 26 he achieved his life-long dream of being a commercial pilot by acing his solo flight on a 65 horse power Aeronca Champan at the Calgary flying club. In 1956 Dad married his sweetheart Ollie. After qualifying for his commercial pilot’s license, he obtained a flying position with Lamb Airways out of the Pas, Manitoba.

Dad logged over 20,000 hours in the years he spent flying in Manitoba. That logged airtime is equivalent to flying two years without landing to refuel. He pioneered the use of water bombers in northern Manitoba and had a reputation of landing DC 3’s on short strips. He was known as one of the best Base Managers and pilots in the province. Dad went on to be an Inspector with the Ministry of Transport for about five years. Dad established his own chartered aircraft business (Ellair Ltd.) which included flying countless medevac’s out of very remote locations. Moving on from Ellair Ltd., Dad got his financial advisor certification with Investors Group. Looking for new opportunities, Dad made the decision to move to Campbell River in 1991 because he liked the seaboard life. Within a short time Dad established Snug Harbor Financial, Mid Island Cruiser Boat Rentals and CR Electric Wheels. He had many more ventures on the drawing table.

Dad was genuine. He trusted people the way he knew people could trust him. He never sugar coated anything, he always told you what he thought. He never gave up. During any setbacks he always found a way to rally on. He could see the good in people and always challenged them to do better. He loved music, he played piano, guitar and violin. He was a generous man and a lot of fun. He invested in his family and
in the community in which he lived. Dad cared deeply about children who suffered and did what he could to help them. He was very proud to be a Shriner.
He really was a very sentimental man. Dad enjoyed golfing and fishing and he loved to show his friends a good time. Those who knew him well, knew his true heart. He is greatly missed. We as a family wish to thank the nurses and doctors at the Campbell River Memorial Hospital for their sensitive and detailed care of Dad.

Dad is survived by Ollie, his loving wife of 58 years, daughters Glenys, Laurie (Darcy), Fran, Jo-Ann (Bernie), Susan (Larry) and sons Greg (Dawn), Ron (Barb), James (Jo), Robert (Elva), 28 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, brother Bernard (Lorraine), and sister Joyce (Norman) as well as many nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his father Rallin, mother Frances, brother Eugene (Ellen) and sister Shirley (John).

with cancer. This past week he was comforted by his family and close friends as he made Wayne's Last Stand. He provided us the opportunity to celebrate his life with him as we walked down memory lane recounting many of the wonderful stories of his life.
